As a kampung boy, I know when is my favorite Malaysian fruit in season. During these months, local markets are flooded with seasonal favorites. Popular seasonal fruits and their harvest times include, Durians (the King of Fruits): Mid-year peak from June to August, with a smaller secondary crop from Nov to January; Mangosteen: June to August, often known as the ‘cooling’ fruit eaten to balance the heat of durians; Rambutan: June to August, with a minor secondary harvest in December as a bonus chance to enjoy them; Duku Langsat: July to September, with a smaller spell from November to February; and Cempedak: May to July, with a shorter season between November to February. Fruits available year-round are bananas, papayas, dragon fruit, and guava.
Based on Malay tradition, fruits make excellent, respectful gifts in Malaysia. They symbolize health, abundance, and prosperity. High-quality presentation and thoughtfully chosen varieties ensure our gift is well-received. In Islamic tradition and emulating Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him, Muslims are strongly encouraged to consume fruits as part of a healthy diet, with the gurus emphasizing that fruits should ideally be eaten before the main meal.

As a matter of fact, Prophet Muhammad PBUH highly encouraged breaking the fast Ramadan with dates. Muslims noted dates are a blessing and provide instant easily absorbable energy to the body. The Prophet always ate fruits in their proper season to maximize health benefits & maintain bodily balance.

Evidently, serving fruits to guests is a cornerstone of Malaysian hospitality. As for my family, to make our guests feel at home and in line with the Malay customs and optimal digestion, we serve as a welcoming gesture shortly after guests arrive with traditional home-made cookies & fresh fruits during their afternoon visits. Last weekend, my family was fortunate to receive the visit of my son-in-law, Faiz's parents, Dato' Paduka Haji Mohd Puat & Dato' Hajah Che Barni, and their daughter-in-law, Dr. Anis together with my wife, Zarina's brother Ir. Haji Abdul Manaf & wife Hajah Raziah & daughter Ir. Hafizah.
