So, a British man, Ahmed Hadi, came to Malaysia with grand plans to start a new life. But after a minor parking dispute in Penang, he now claims our country is a “hellhole with no human rights.” https://newswav.com/A2502_jchAPB?s=A_zaHSNaL&language=en
Why? Because after allegedly breaking the law by damaging public property, he had to face the consequences. How utterly shocking.
Let’s break this down. Ahmed parked his car, attempted to pay, but his cards didn’t work. He then spoke to parking attendants, got no immediate resolution, and decided that the best course of action was… to manually lift the barrier and drive off. https://newswav.com/A2502_jchAPB?s=A_zaHSNaL&language=en
Unsurprisingly, that act of self-declared freedom resulted in his arrest. Now, he’s furious that the court is holding onto his passport as part of the bail process.
Here’s a reality check: If a foreigner in the UK damaged public property—say, breaking a parking barrier at Heathrow or knocking down a bollard in London—the British police wouldn’t exactly invite him for tea and biscuits.
He’d be arrested, charged, and, depending on the case, possibly held while the legal system ran its course.
And yet, somehow, when this happens in Malaysia, it’s an “outrageous” violation of human rights.
His real complaint seems to be that he wasn’t given immediate VIP treatment. He found the jail conditions “awful,” which, let’s be honest, is not unique to Malaysia. It’s a jail, not a five-star resort. And he didn’t like that the legal process took time, as if Malaysia should magically fast-track his case just because he’s British.
What Ahmed Hadi has done is what too many Westerners do when they visit foreign countries: expect absolute leniency when they break the rules, and when they don’t get it, paint the country as backward or oppressive. It’s the textbook colonial-era mindset—laws are only good if they work in their favour.
Malaysia isn’t a “hellhole.” It’s a sovereign nation with laws, just like the UK. If you follow them, you’ll have no problem.
If you break them, well, you deal with the consequences. And if that’s too much to handle, perhaps Malaysia isn’t the problem.
