This surge reflects a strong recovery from the pandemic and highlights Southeast Asia’s magnetic appeal to travelers worldwide.

Malaysians love Thailand the most

Interestingly, 3.28 of the 26.4 million tourists in Thailand during the same period were also Malaysians.

This interconnectivity showcases Malaysia as not only a popular destination but also a key contributor to regional tourism.

Here’s the list of the top 9 international tourist arrivals as compiled by seasia.stats:

  1. Malaysia – 26 million
  2. Thailand – 24.6 million
  3. Singapore – 11.3 million
  4. Vietnam – 11.2 million
  5. Indonesia – 9.9 million
  6. Philippines – 4.6 million
  7. Cambodia – 4.4 million
  8. Laos – 2.4 million
  9. Myanmar – 751,000

However, it’s important to note that the comparison of tourist arrivals across Southeast Asian countries is not entirely straightforward.

Data only up to November this year

While Malaysia and Thailand provided data up to November, other nations like Singapore, Indonesia, and Cambodia reported figures only until October.

Laos and Myanmar’s statistics extended to September and August respectively.

Additionally, Brunei and Timor-Leste have not released any tourism data.

Despite these disparities, the high numbers, especially for Malaysia, are a positive indicator for the region’s tourism industry, which suffered significantly during the pandemic.
