Unveiled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, this ‘ILMU’ LLM is short for “Intelek Luhur Malaysia Untukmu”, and it is ready to handle multiple types of input data such as text, voice, and images because its intention is to be ready for real-world applications across multiple sectors from the get-go.

If you’re curious about the meaning behind the name ‘ILMU’, here’s what they mean:

  • Intelek – Context-aware smarts
  • Luhur – Ethical principles rooted in Malaysian values
  • Malaysia – Cultural and linguistic fluency
  • Untukmu – Built for the people

Under the hood, ILMU is hosted on YTL AI Cloud, ensuring enterprise-grade performance, security, and local data residency. It’s also built with national interests and governance in mind which is something that could help boost trusted AI adoption across industries.

Dato’ Seri Yeoh Seok Hong of YTL Power International described it as both a technological leap and a national capability that can power smarter systems, increase productivity, and drive inclusive progress for everyone from the government to everyday Malaysians.

Meanwhile, Digital Minister YB Gobind Singh Deo called it a groundbreaking milestone, saying it reflects the country’s vision of a tech-driven, inclusive, and culturally relevant future.

Surprisingly, ILMU’s performance is capable of matching the likes of GPT-40 and Llama 3.1, such as dominating in the aspects of Bahasa Melayu understanding, Manglish fluency, and even local dialects like Kelate.

CEO Foong Chee Mun pointed out that ILMU is already delivering real-world results in industries like education and healthcare, adding that for Bahasa Melayu, it’s the best-performing LLM in the world.

To kickstart adoption, YTL AI Labs is rolling out the ILMU AI Accelerator Programme with MDEC. Startups, SMEs, and even global providers can apply for Malaysia Digital (MD) Status perks, facilitated work passes, and RM5 million worth of ILMU API credits to build AI solutions tailored for local and global markets.

For businesses, API access is currently available and you can register here, while the mass public will be able to use ILMUchat very soon, slated for early access launch on September 16.
