The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is dedicated to advancing the agenda of biodiversity conservation in Malaysia, according to its minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. He highlighted Malaysia's status as one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries and emphasized the nation's proactive measures to incorporate the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) into national policies, tailored to the country’s unique circumstances, priorities, and capabilities.
The KMGBF urges all stakeholders to take decisive action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by supporting the framework's global implementation. Malaysia stands out as the first ASEAN nation and among the early adopters under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to update its national biodiversity policy to align with the KMGBF.
“Biodiversity is a precious national asset, and its conservation is our shared responsibility. With unwavering commitment and effort, I believe we can achieve our goal of safeguarding our natural heritage for the benefit of both current and future generations,” Nik Nazmi stated in a message marking International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB).
Nik Nazmi outlined several key initiatives aimed at bolstering the country's biodiversity conservation efforts. These include the Ecological Fiscal Transfer for Biodiversity Conservation (EFT), the Biodiversity Protection and Patrolling Programme (BP3), and compensation schemes for property and crop damage resulting from wildlife conflicts.
The United Nations General Assembly designated May 22 as IDB in 2000 to promote global awareness and understanding of biodiversity issues. This year’s theme, "Be part of the Plan," underscores the collective effort required to address these challenges.
To commemorate IDB, NRES has organized a series of activities. These include townhall sessions focused on enhancing the EFT implementation, establishing the Malaysia Biodiversity Centre (MBC) and the Natural History Museum (NHM) Malaysia, as well as educational talks, demonstrations, and a biodiversity quiz.
Nik Nazmi's message highlights Malaysia's commitment to biodiversity conservation and the importance of national and international collaboration in protecting the planet’s biological diversity. The ministry's initiatives and planned activities aim to foster greater public awareness and participation in these vital efforts, ensuring that biodiversity conservation remains a priority for Malaysia and the global community.
