The Malaysia suicide reporting guidelines, announced by Minister of Communications YB Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, aim to reshape how suicide is discussed across all platforms from newsrooms and social media to influencers and everyday users.

Why These Guidelines Matter

This isn’t your usual press release. Here’s what makes this huge:

  • Developed by everyone from doctors to digital creators

  • Applies to ALL platforms: news, blogs, social, YouTube, TikTok you name it

  • Focuses on empathy and accuracy

  • Backed by real feedback from Malaysians during public consultation

  • First in the world to blend mental health science with modern media behaviour

What’s Inside the Guidelines?

These practical do’s and don’ts aim to protect mental health while promoting safe and meaningful conversations.

The framework includes:

  • How to talk about suicide without triggering readers

  • ❌ Avoiding graphic images and sensational headlines

  • Including mental health resources in your content

  • Encouraging recovery stories (hello, Papageno Effect!)

  • Tips for influencers and digital creators on posting safely

Malaysia's Role on the Global Stage

The Malaysia suicide reporting guidelines are already making waves internationally. They’ve been chosen for presentation at the upcoming IASP World Congress 2025 in Vienna a sign that Malaysia is taking serious leadership in global mental health advocacy.

Why You Should Care

This is not just about media. It’s about building a more caring digital culture where our words don't just inform but also protect.
