In a bid to enhance the appeal of the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, the Malaysian government has announced substantial revisions to its existing conditions. Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Deputy Prime Minister, revealed that these changes are designed to make the programme more enticing to potential applicants while ensuring that national security is not compromised.
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who presided over a recent tourism and culture Cabinet committee meeting, disclosed that the revised conditions would introduce a tiered system for the fixed deposit amount required of applicants. The tiers, labeled silver, gold, and platinum, will cater to individuals with varying financial capabilities. Additionally, the government plans to collaborate with the Immigration Department to streamline the application process. Following the completion of all necessary forms, applications will be processed within three working days to verify security clearances.
One of the key revisions includes a stipulation that prohibits applicants from selling their property within 10 years of acquisition. Furthermore, visa renewals will be mandatory every five years. To further accommodate applicants, the government will allow them to select the school of their choice for their children, providing greater flexibility and convenience.
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized that these changes aim to enhance the existing system without compromising national security. He also encouraged the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry, as well as the Home Ministry, to take immediate steps to attract more MM2H applicants, including those interested in properties in Forest City.
The move to revamp the MM2H programme follows a statement by Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing in parliament on March 12. Tiong expressed optimism that the proposed relaxations would attract more foreign nationals to the programme, aligning with the government's goal of making it more attractive and competitive. The changes are consistent with the Budget 2024 announcement, which highlighted the government's intention to enhance the MM2H programme.
As of January 31 this year, there were 56,066 active MM2H pass holders, comprising 27,759 principals and 28,307 dependents. China leads the list with 24,765 holders, followed by South Korea (4,940), Japan (4,733), Bangladesh (3,604), the United Kingdom (2,234), Taiwan (1,611), the United States (1,340), Singapore (1,282), India (1,223), and Australia (1,069).
The revisions to the MM2H programme are expected to significantly boost its attractiveness and competitiveness, attracting a more diverse pool of applicants from around the world.
