Malaysia pledges support for Syria's reconstruction, Anwar says

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to bolstering bilateral relations with Syria, particularly in the economic domain.

In a message shared on social media, Anwar congratulated Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the formation of the country’s new government and expressed Malaysia’s willingness to assist in Syria's reconstruction efforts.

Anwar highlighted Malaysia's eagerness to promote investment from local businesses into Syria, with the aim of contributing to the country’s rebuilding process.

“President al-Sharaa has also invited me to visit Syria as part of efforts to further strengthen the cooperation between our two nations,” he said, underlining the growing ties between the two countries.

Following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad by anti-regime forces led by Ahmed al-Sharaa in December, a transitional government headed by Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir was appointed for a three-month period. This marked a significant shift in Syria's political landscape, which had been under Assad's rule for nearly 25 years.

Al-Sharaa was later declared President for the transition period at the end of January, taking the helm of a nation in flux. Assad, who fled to Russia after anti-regime groups seized control of Damascus on December 8, saw the fall of his government, effectively ending the rule of the Baath Party, which had held power since 1963. - April 7, 2025
