The Allianz Global Wealth Report has revealed yet another delightful reminder of how far down the financial food chain we are.
Malaysia, ranked 40th in global wealth. We’re not quite bottom feeders, but we certainly aren't swimming with the sharks either.
While Singapore lounges comfortably in 4th place, counting their cash as if they’ve invented wealth itself, we’re here at 40th, clutching our €9,430 (RM44,000) per person as if it’s a winning lottery ticket. But hey, it's better than nothing, right?
Let's get some perspective here: Malaysia may be 40th, but it’s important to note that we're still ahead of Thailand, the Philippines, and even Vietnam. That's something to put in the Malaysia Boleh scrapbook!
It’s not about who’s on top, but who’s beneath us. And while we may not have the financial assets of the U.S.—where citizens enjoy €260,320 (about RM1.2 million) per person—let’s not forget that in their shiny number one spot, they also have plenty of homelessness and urban tent cities to go with it. Financial assets or not, sleeping in a cardboard box on the streets of San Francisco or New York City doesn’t sound so appealing.
I mean, just think about it—sure, in the U.S. you could have €260,320 in net assets, but you might also be paying an arm and a leg for basic healthcare or drowning in student loan debt that feels more like a ball and chain than a boost in life. Here in Malaysia, we may be “poor” by comparison, but our quality of life can be surprisingly sweet. Where else can you get a hearty nasi lemak for just a few ringgit, while simultaneously pretending you’re one bad stock market day away from landing in the millionaire’s club?
And let’s talk about debt. Apparently, only Chile beats us in having higher debt per capita. But even that’s not the end of the world. Debt is just the modern way of saying, "I'm living life beyond my means, but I'm still living it!" It’s like a rite of passage for the middle-income group. Who cares if we owe the banks half our salary every month? As long as we still have our Proton Geely and can afford a staycation in Langkawi, we’re living the dream, aren’t we?
In Singapore, they might be sipping champagne from the comfort of their Marina Bay penthouses, but can they truly understand the joy of sitting at a mamak at 2 AM, surrounded by good friends and cheap teh tarik?
Quality of life, people! It’s not all about zeros in your bank account. Here, life is simpler. The world might see us as being ranked 40th, but we know the truth: Malaysia is number one in living life with flair. We may not have Singapore’s €171,930 per person, but our country isn’t one giant pressure cooker of stress and unrealistically high expectations either.
Besides, can money really buy happiness? In Switzerland, they rank 2nd with €255,440 per person, but their neutrality has made them an international punchline.
Denmark, in 3rd place, has all that financial wealth but not a drop of tropical sunshine! Meanwhile, here in Malaysia, we enjoy both the rain and sun in a single afternoon. Now that is wealth.
So the next time someone gloats about how far down the wealth ladder Malaysia is, just smile and remind them that while we may be financially challenged, we’re culturally and emotionally rich.
No, we don't have as many millionaires as the U.S., but we also don't have to step over tents and makeshift homes on our way to work.
At 40th place, we’ve achieved something special: we’re rich enough to dream big, but grounded enough to not let it get to our heads.
