TAWAU — Although Malaysia has slipped slightly in the latest Global Peace Index (GPI), Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail insists the nation remains firmly on track towards sustained peace and stability.
Saifuddin said Malaysia is now ranked 13th globally, down from 10th place last year. Despite the dip in ranking, the country’s GPI score remains unchanged.
He noted that other countries, particularly in Scandinavia, had overtaken Malaysia due to improved performance in specific indicators such as peacekeeping expenditure, while Malaysia’s score held steady.
“The GPI assesses dozens of indicators. Compared with 163 countries, our standing demonstrates that we’re on the right path.
“It’s important for us to maintain this momentum of peace, and make the most of the GPI indicators,” he said at the launch of the Eastern Sabah Security Command’s (Esscom) Kampung Angkat Madani initiative in Kampung Inderasabah today.
According to the GPI, published on the Vision of Humanity website, Malaysia achieved a score of 1.469, placing it 13th out of 163 countries surveyed.
To enhance Malaysia’s future standing, Saifuddin said the Home Ministry is working to attract more foreign tourists.
He said that the Home Ministry has implemented various initiatives, including briefing sessions and security review programmes with foreign diplomats.
“The ministry has brought diplomats from high-potential countries, such as the United States and those in Europe, to the east coast of Sabah, so that they can see the situation for themselves, and encourage their citizens to visit Malaysia,” he said, adding that the programme has had a positive impact on boosting tourist arrivals to the east coast of Sabah. — July 4, 2025
