Malaysia's recent advancements in improving its standing on the Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index (CPI) face potential setbacks following the controversial decision to halve the sentence of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in connection to the 1MDB scandal, warns Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.

Expressing concern, the DAP MP contends that this decision may convey a lack of serious commitment to combating corruption in the country. Emphasizing the gravity of Najib's case, Ramkarpal highlights that the former prime minister was not only convicted on all charges related to his SRC International case but was also labeled a "national embarrassment" by a Federal Court judge during his appeal.

Ramkarpal argues that Najib's original sentence of 12 years' imprisonment and a RM210 million fine was already a lenient outcome considering the severity of his crimes. He urges the Pardon's Board to transparently disclose the reasons behind commuting Najib's sentences, asserting that it is a matter of public interest. Failure to provide a clear explanation, he warns, could lead to speculation that the decision was unjustified.

In a surprising move, the Federal Territories Pardons Board recently announced a significant reduction in Najib's prison sentence, cutting it in half, and reducing his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million. This decision implies that Najib, who began serving his prison term in August 2022, could be released as early as 2028, or even sooner if he qualifies for parole on good behavior after serving two-thirds of the reduced six-year sentence.

Despite the acceptance of the decision by Najib's Umno party, which maintains his innocence and advocates for a full pardon, questions linger over the transparency and justification of this move. Malaysia had recently made progress in the 2023 CPI, rising to the 57th position, breaking a three-year streak of decline on the global corruption ladder. However, this development might be overshadowed by the concerns raised regarding the handling of Najib's case and its implications for the country's commitment to tackling corruption.
