In the 47th Epidemiology Week of 2023, spanning from November 19 to 25, Malaysia saw a notable surge in Covid-19 cases, reaching a total of 3,626 reported cases. This marked a substantial 57.3% increase from the preceding week's tally of 2,305 cases.
Health Director-General Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan shed light on the demographics affected, revealing that 48% of these cases involved individuals aged between 20 and 40 years old. Encouragingly, over 98% of those afflicted exhibited only mild symptoms, alleviating concerns about severe illness for the majority.
Highlighting the consistent trend in recent weeks, Dr Radzi emphasized that Malaysia had surpassed the threshold of 1,000 weekly cases from ME 41/2023 to ME 47/2023, with varying escalation rates ranging from 7.1% to the current 57.3%.
Despite the rise, he reassured the public that the situation remained manageable. The country's health facilities, he reported, were coping well with an admission rate of 2.9 per 100,000 population during ME 47/2023. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed occupancy stood at 0.4%, non-critical Covid-19 beds at 0.9%, and patients requiring ventilators remained at 0.2%. These statistics suggested that existing healthcare resources were not unduly strained.
However, Dr Radzi cautioned about the active clusters, numbering eight in total and accounting for 121 cases. Alarmingly, educational settings were the primary hotspots for these clusters, constituting the majority of reported instances.
Addressing the emergence of new Covid-19 variants, he highlighted the detection of four instances of the Omicron variant during ME 47/2023, all categorized as Variants of Concern (VOC). The cumulative count of cases attributed to either VOC or Variant of Interest (VOI) reached 28,102, comprising 27,297 VOC cases and 805 VOI cases.
In specific reference to the Omicron variant BA.2.86, Dr Radzi confirmed two reported cases within Malaysia. These cases, fortunately, were managed as outpatients and remained in stable condition, easing immediate concerns about severe illness associated with this specific variant.
He additionally pointed to the World Health Organization's alert regarding the surge in BA.2.86 variant cases, which gained attention as a VOI since its initial report on July 24.
The Health Director-General's comprehensive update on the Covid-19 situation in Malaysia highlighted the rising cases, the demographic distribution of infections, healthcare facility resilience, and the evolving landscape of concerning variants.
