The Malaysian Cabinet has greenlit the inclusion of several key agencies into the Digital Ministry's purview, marking a significant shift in administrative structures. Led by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, this decision involves transferring entities such as Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), responsible for Malaysia's 5G network operations, alongside other crucial bodies like the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu), the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), and Cybersecurity Malaysia.
Notably, this move consolidates cybersecurity efforts, previously housed within the Prime Minister’s Department, into the Digital Ministry. Minister Fahmi emphasized the importance of this shift, citing the necessity for cohesive corporate and private sector engagement within the digital landscape. He stressed the need for rebranding initiatives to ensure clarity and confidence regarding digital safety, all of which fall under the jurisdiction of the Digital Ministry, as resolved in the recent Cabinet meeting.
While affirming the retention of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under his ministry's oversight, Fahmi also addressed the status of MIMOS, Malaysia’s national applied research and development center. MIMOS, previously under the Prime Minister's Department, is set to return to the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), except for its digital ID function, which will be transitioned to the Digital Ministry upon its completion in March.
Furthermore, Fahmi celebrated Malaysia's 5G network achievement, surpassing the 80% coverage of populated areas in December. He lauded the collective effort that facilitated a remarkable four percent increase within a month to meet the Prime Minister's set target. Looking ahead, a joint task force is scheduled to convene shortly, composed of pertinent agency secretaries and signatories of the share subscription agreement, to strategize the forthcoming steps in this digital progression.
The establishment of the Digital Ministry, initiated in the previous year's Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, signifies a concerted commitment to advancing Malaysia's digital landscape. Former communications minister Gobind was appointed to helm this significant ministry, paving the way for coordinated efforts in the nation's digital transformation.
