Malaysia’s digital industry hits RM92 billion as tech pioneers sweep regional awards

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s digital creative sector has emerged as a primary engine of national economic growth, generating RM92.5 billion in revenue to date, according to the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), an agency under the Digital Ministry.

The data underscores a significant shift in the country’s economic landscape, with the industry attracting RM85.7 billion in investment and creating more than 11,000 “high-value” jobs. MDEC, in a social media posting yesterday, said the performance reflects a long-term strategic pivot toward animation, digital games and emerging creative technology.

The economic milestone coincides with a series of recognitions for Malaysian firms at several international events in recent times, signalling Malaysia’s growing influence in Southeast Asian technology.

In January, three Malaysian companies earned podium finishes at the Asean Digital Awards 2026, held during the Asean Digital Ministers Meeting (ADGMIN) 2026 in Hanoi.

UMCH Technology Sdn Bhd came out on top in the Private Sector category, while Innoveam Sdn Bhd was awarded bronze in the same category. Enfiniti Interactive Xperiences Sdn Bhd won the top prize (gold) in the Digital Content category.

Beyond animation

Malaysia’s animation sector continues to gain global recognition, driven by homegrown IPs such as Upin & Ipin, Ejen Ali and Mechamato. Most recently, Papa Zola The Movie became the highest-grossing Malaysian animated film, earning over RM60 million across Malaysia and Brunei.

The latest figures highlight a diversification into advanced immersive technologies. Companies such as Silversea Media Group and UnBound are now exporting augmented reality and virtual reality solutions globally.

UnBound recently received international recognition in Melbourne for its gamified learning platform, which is currently being used to modernise educational syllabi across the region.

The ‘AI Nation’ roadmap

The surge in digital exports comes as the government prepares to finalise the Digital Creative Ecosystem (DICE) Roadmap 2026–2030.

“Malaysians continue to prove that our creativity stands at the forefront of global excellence,” said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo in January 2026.

“From animation to emerging creative technologies, we are becoming a trusted base for global studios seeking access to Asean’s consumer markets.”

Putrajaya has allocated an additional RM20 million in the latest budget specifically to bolster the digital creative ecosystem, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into local content production.
