Bagan MP and DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has voiced strong concerns over the education ministry’s recent decision to host a Taliban-led Afghan delegation, raising concerns about whether Malaysia might be seen as endorsing Afghanistan's heavily criticized policies, especially its prohibition on women's education.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Lim pointed out that Afghanistan remains the only nation globally that explicitly prohibits women and girls from attending secondary schools and universities, a move the United Nations has labeled as “gender apartheid.” This stance, Lim emphasized, is diametrically opposed to Malaysia’s commitment to gender equality and women’s rights.
"Our nation has consistently upheld the right to education for everyone, free from discrimination. Hosting representatives from a government that implements such oppressive policies casts doubt on our commitment to fundamental human rights," Lim stated.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek confirmed the visit, noting that her ministry had shared insights on Malaysia’s education system with the delegation. However, Lim questioned whether the discussions addressed the Taliban’s ban on women’s education and asked how this visit could benefit Malaysia.
“I have received many questions about this matter. Does hosting this delegation suggest we are indifferent to their gender discrimination policies? We need clarification,” he said, adding that he plans to raise the issue during the upcoming Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat.
In March 2023, Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated Malaysia’s willingness to engage with the Taliban-led Afghan government but underscored that Malaysia stood firm on the importance of women’s education. Lim called for the education ministry to clarify its position to avoid misinterpretations about Malaysia’s stance on this sensitive issue.
With Afghanistan’s oppressive policies drawing global criticism, Lim’s concerns resonate with many Malaysians who fear that such engagements could harm the nation’s reputation as a proponent of human rights and gender equality. The question remains: can Malaysia engage diplomatically without compromising its values?
