PAS President Tan Sri Hadi Awang has delivered a sharp critique of the unity government’s reform agenda, warning that Malaysia is being steered toward moral decline and social instability. His statement emphasized that reforms modeled on Western systems are fundamentally flawed, as they prioritize secular reasoning while neglecting divine guidance.

According to Hadi, the government’s initiatives—though presented as improvements to political, economic, social, and religious structures—remain rooted in secularism. He argued that such reforms, detached from spiritual principles, inevitably erode the moral foundation of society. Drawing comparisons with Western nations, he noted that similar approaches abroad have coincided with rising crime rates, fractured communities, and widespread social disorder.

Hadi expressed concern that Malaysia is beginning to experience the same consequences. He highlighted that suicide, once a rare occurrence among Malay Muslims, has become increasingly common. Alongside this troubling trend, he pointed to the growing prevalence of family disputes and school bullying, which he linked to the influence of foreign cultures and values penetrating households through modern media.

The PAS leader also referenced historical examples, particularly the reforms introduced by Kemal Atatürk in Türkiye. Despite being hailed as modernization efforts, Hadi argued that these changes failed to restore Türkiye’s former glory and instead distanced the nation from its spiritual roots. He extended this critique to Eastern European countries that embraced Western models, asserting that they too have faced deeper decline rather than renewal.

In his view, Malaysia risks repeating these mistakes if reform advocates continue to align themselves with Western ideologies. He cautioned that such alignment would ultimately lead the nation into the same cycle of deterioration experienced elsewhere.

Hadi’s remarks underscore a broader debate within Malaysia about the balance between modernization and tradition. While the government promotes reforms as necessary steps toward progress, critics like Hadi insist that true advancement must be anchored in faith and moral values. His warning reflects a growing concern that secular-driven policies may undermine the cultural and spiritual identity of the Malay Muslim community.

The statement serves as both a critique of current governance and a call for Malaysians to reflect on the direction of national development. By framing Western-style reforms as a path toward moral decay, Hadi positions himself as a defender of faith-based principles, urging the country to resist external influences that could compromise its social and spiritual integrity.
