Change is always complicated, isn't it. You gain something, you lose something, and you spend the next six months explaining to your relatives what happened.
That's roughly the situation with Malaysia's new MyKad rollout, which officially began on June 1, 2026. The upgrade is significant, long overdue honestly, and more than doubles the current security count, going from 23 features on the existing card to an impressive 53 security elements on the new one. These include laser engraving, ultraviolet features, holograms, guilloche patterns, microtext, QR codes for enforcement verification, and a chip with significantly stronger encryption technology.
The new card incorporates advanced biometric data, enhanced microchip technology, and multiple layers of verification that make the old MyKad look like something from a museum. Given that identity fraud is one of the fastest-growing crime categories in Malaysia, directly linked to the scam epidemic we've already talked about, this upgrade can't come soon enough.
But here's the thing you need to know, the thing that's already generating complaints online. The new MyKad will no longer support Touch 'n Go functionality. That's right. If you've been using your MyKad to tap through toll booths, say goodbye to that convenience. The Touch 'n Go function is being removed from the new card entirely.
For many Malaysians, especially those who never got around to loading money onto a separate TnG card, this is a genuine inconvenience. But it's also the right call. Combining a national identity document with a stored-value payment system always created a security risk. Losing your MyKad didn't just mean losing your ID. It potentially meant losing money too. Separating the functions is cleaner, even if the transition is annoying.
What do you need to do? If you're due for a MyKad renewal, the new version will be issued automatically from June 2026 onwards. There's no need to rush out and replace a valid existing card, but you should start planning around the removal of the Touch 'n Go feature if you currently rely on it.
The broader significance of this upgrade goes beyond convenience. Your MyKad is linked to practically every major transaction in your life. Property purchases. Medical records. Voting. Employment verification. Tax submissions. An identity document that can be easily forged or cloned doesn't just inconvenience you. It can destroy your financial life. The 53 new security features are a direct response to the increasing sophistication of identity theft operations, many of which are tied to the very scam syndicates we discussed earlier.
So yes, you're losing Touch 'n Go on your IC. But you're gaining a document that's genuinely hard to fake. That trade-off, on balance, makes sense.
