Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the actual amount of public funds lost to leakages and fraud is far higher than the RM15.5 billion recovered in the past two years.

CYBERJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that the actual amount of public funds lost to leakages, fraud and theft is believed to be far higher than the RM15.5 billion recovered over the past two years.

“If you ask me whether that was it (only RM15.5 billion), I really am not convinced,” he said in his speech at the 44th World Customs Day celebration.

He stressed that more public funds could still be saved through the continuation and strengthening of ongoing efforts.

Anwar said the recovery of such a significant sum reflects the capability and commitment of various law enforcement agencies.

These agencies include the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Royal Malaysia Police.

He said they worked collectively to detect, prevent and recover funds lost through leakages, fraud and misappropriation.

Their efforts are aimed at safeguarding the people and the nation.
