The Israel-Palestine conflict has long been a unifying issue in Malaysia, where a Muslim-majority population forms the political majority. The support for the Palestinian cause transcends religious boundaries, encompassing humanitarian concerns. Advocacy for Palestinian statehood remains a cohesive force that brings together people of different races, religions, and political affiliations.

An integral aspect of the Anwar Ibrahim administration's agenda is to champion the rights of Palestinians. This commitment not only aligns with the sentiments of Malaysian Muslim voters but is also rooted in the country's deep-seated policy of non-alignment.

Throughout its history, Malaysia has consistently voiced its pro-Palestine stance, demonstrating solidarity through large-scale initiatives and outreach programs. The nation's condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza and its unwavering push for a two-state solution reflect Malaysia's dedication to what it perceives as a more equitable global response to the Palestinian cause.

The current conflict, however, presents a fresh challenge, as any course of action carries its own set of implications for Kuala Lumpur. The differing perspectives on maintaining ties with Hamas between Kuala Lumpur and Washington, coupled with China's significant financial investments in Malaysia, further complicate the matter.

The United States expresses its discontent with Kuala Lumpur's hesitance to sever connections with Hamas. Anwar Ibrahim has openly discussed the pressure and threats he has faced from Western powers due to Malaysia's position.

For Washington and its allies, the conundrum lies in determining how best to navigate Malaysia's steadfast stance on the Israel-Palestine issue without jeopardizing their long-term reliance on the country in the broader Indo-Pacific geopolitical landscape, especially in their competition with China.

Malaysia finds itself in a position where aligning with the West is contingent on a substantial shift in Western policy concerning the Middle East.

Malaysia's endeavors to broker a tangible resolution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict face significant challenges. The nation's lack of diplomatic relations with Israel, coupled with its unambiguous position on the matter, leaves little room for maneuvering.

Despite this, Western powers keenly observe Malaysia's evolving influence and leverage in the Global South, ASEAN, and the Muslim world, recognizing the potential implications for their broader geopolitical strategies, particularly in containing China.

Questions linger regarding how long Western powers can withstand the mounting pressure to rein in Israel's actions in Gaza without permanently straining relations with the Muslim world.

Malaysia could potentially wield strategic influence over key players in the Arab world, ASEAN, and China, bolstering global solidarity with the Palestinians and exerting pressure on the West. However, this would require Malaysia to weigh the longer-term implications of reduced security and economic cooperation with the West against the immediate gains of aligning with anti-Western sentiments.

Kuala Lumpur's potential role as a kingmaker in the ongoing Sino-U.S. rivalry, leveraging its strengths in critical sectors like semiconductors and rare earths, remains a pivotal consideration.

Any potential fallout from diminishing security assurances by the West in response to Malaysia's stance can be offset by the nation's pursuit of enhanced defense and economic collaboration with Japan, South Korea, and existing allies such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.

Malaysia may also advocate for fresh strategic approaches to the Gaza conflict during the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Special Summit in Riyadh, potentially leveraging oil-producing member states.

While the West may not expect Malaysia to exert influence in tempering Tehran's involvement in the conflict through its support for Hezbollah, Malaysia remains a key player in preventing an expanded Middle East conflict with global repercussions, intertwined with the strategic moves of the United States and China in prioritizing their interests in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific.
