Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underlined the importance of Malaysia developing its own internal capabilities rather than depending excessively on foreign technology. He viewed this as critical for safeguarding the country’s classified information and strategic assets, especially in areas such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

The reminder came after he chaired the second meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN) for 2025 on Thursday. During the discussion, the committee stressed that new technologies must be approached through a security perspective to ensure that national interests are not compromised.

The Prime Minister noted that the government was determined to strengthen the nation’s cyber defences through multiple strategies. These included the protection of critical infrastructure, enhanced public awareness, and stronger collaboration between government agencies, private sector players, and international partners. Legislative measures were also in progress, with the Cybercrime Bill expected to be tabled in Parliament by the end of the year.

He further highlighted the role of individuals in data protection when conducting online activities. As an example, he pointed to the growing use of MyDigital ID, which has seen an average of 25,000 daily users following its integration with applications such as MyJPJ, MySejahtera, MyBayar PDRM, and MyGOV. The system, he added, is meant to provide Malaysians with a more secure digital identity framework while helping reduce risks linked to data misuse.

Malaysia’s position on the global stage was also addressed. The Prime Minister indicated that the country would soon sign the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime in Hanoi, Vietnam, signalling a stronger commitment towards international cooperation in tackling digital crime. This move was presented as part of Malaysia’s wider effort to align its policies with global standards on cyber security and digital governance.

The committee’s meeting also placed emphasis on advancing research and development in post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Collaboration with the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), academic researchers, and industry players was deemed essential to prepare the country for emerging challenges in a world where quantum computing could disrupt existing security systems.

Anwar expressed confidence that these combined initiatives would enhance the resilience of Malaysia’s cyber ecosystem. The ultimate goal, he said, was to protect critical infrastructure, reduce exposure to cyber threats, and ensure that the nation’s interests and the well-being of its people remain secure in an increasingly digital world.
