KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia has slammed foreign intervention in the internal affairs of sovereign states, warning against threats or the use of force, the Foreign Ministry said today in response to reports of US troops landing in Venezuela.

Wisma Putra stressed that the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international law must be upheld.

The ministry said it is closely monitoring developments after US forces reportedly stormed Caracas yesterday, seizing Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in a bombing raid and flying him to New York.

Maduro and his wife are expected to face arraignment before a New York judge on charges of narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking and illegal weapons possession.

“Malaysia consistently upholds peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue, respect for sovereignty and adherence to international norms,” Wisma Putra said, according to Bernama.

“At this critical time, all parties must exercise maximum restraint and pursue diplomatic solutions.”

Wisma Putra added that its immediate priority is the safety of Malaysians abroad. The Malaysian embassy in Caracas has contacted all registered citizens, confirming they are safe and accounted for.

“The embassy is actively monitoring the situation and stands ready to provide consular assistance if required,” the statement said.

Malaysians in Venezuela are urged to remain vigilant, follow local authorities’ instructions and stay in close contact with the embassy. - January 4, 2026
