Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expresses gratitude to Iran for allowing stranded Malaysian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, securing vital energy supplies.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has formally thanked Iran for granting safe passage to Malaysian oil tankers through the critical Strait of Hormuz.

Anwar conveyed Malaysia’s appreciation during a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Valiollah Mohammadi, on the sidelines of the Kuala Lumpur-Ankara Dialogue 2026.

“This step is crucial in ensuring the continuity of energy supply, while helping to ease pressure on the cost of living and support the country’s economic stability,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.

The diplomatic breakthrough follows high-level engagement between Anwar and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on March 26.

It was previously confirmed that one of seven stranded Malaysian vessels had been allowed to proceed to its final destination.

Media reports now indicate that six additional Malaysian vessels currently stuck in the strait will also be permitted to pass through in stages.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint for global energy, with 20% of the world’s crude oil and gas transiting its narrow waters.

Regional tensions have affected the route following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory and facilities since February 28.
