Malaysia to become ACWA power’s Southeast Asian hub, says PM

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hailed ACWA Power’s move to choose Malaysia as its primary hub in Southeast Asia, particularly in the fields of renewable energy and green hydrogen.

He described the Saudi-based energy company’s investment as a milestone resulting from increasingly strong diplomatic and economic ties between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

“This is another positive development stemming from the close Malaysia–Saudi Arabia partnership, particularly following my meeting with the founder of ACWA Power during the ASEAN–GCC Summit,” he said in a statement on his official Facebook page.

Anwar added that the investment not only affirms Malaysia’s energy transition policies, but also paves the way for the creation of high-skilled job opportunities and accelerates technology transfer.

ACWA Power is currently engaged in strategic collaborations with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), UEM Lestra and Terengganu Inc. to develop renewable energy projects, green hydrogen initiatives, and a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant, in line with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

“This commitment strengthens Malaysia’s position as a leading regional player in sustainable energy and supports efforts towards a low-carbon economy,” Anwar said. - August 7, 2025
