JOHOR BAHRU: The government will immediately establish an Orange Economic Council to strengthen the creative industry as a key driver of economic growth.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will chair the new council.
Fahmi, who is also the MADANI Government spokesperson, stated that the Communications Ministry will serve as a secretariat and play a central role in its formation.
He explained that several committees will be formed, with the ministry instructed to expedite the council’s establishment amid the ongoing global energy crisis.
The minister made these remarks after attending the appointment ceremony for the chairman of the Johor National Information Dissemination Centre advisory panel.
Fahmi highlighted that the orange economy contributed 6.8% to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product in 2024.
He added that the sector could be further strengthened through NADI centres, which provide digital infrastructure and high-speed internet.
To date, there are 1,098 NADI centres nationwide serving approximately 1.9 million members.
Johor alone has 101 centres with about 200,000 members, according to the minister.
A new NADI centre in Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, is expected to be completed within the next two to three months.
Fahmi also noted that appointment letters for chairmen of MADANI Communities across Johor will be distributed in mid-April.
Earlier, he presented appointment letters to 26 chairmen of the NADI advisory panels in Johor.
These appointments are expected to enhance community participation and strengthen programme coordination.
The move aims to ensure NADI initiatives are better aligned with local community needs.
