MALAYSIA could unlock up to US$113.4 billion in productivity through the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI), according to Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
Speaking at the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2025 in Shanghai yesterday, Gobind emphasised the transformative economic potential of AI across multiple sectors and called for international collaboration in managing the evolving technology.
“In this AI-shaped era, collaboration is essential,” he said. “Only through shared commitment, innovation and vigilance can we ensure that the digital world remains a force for good.”
Gobind noted that Malaysia is committed to inclusive and responsible AI development, underscoring the importance of bridging the digital divide and ensuring emerging technologies benefit all of humanity.
He also welcomed the outcome document of the Global AI Governance Action Plan and highlighted Malaysia’s domestic progress, including the establishment of the National AI Office (NAIO) in December 2024 to coordinate the nation’s AI agenda.
As ASEAN Chair in 2025, Malaysia is taking the lead on AI safety through the newly launched ASEAN AI Safety Network, which will serve as a regional platform for best practice sharing, research collaboration, standards development, and responsible AI use.
“By driving innovation, enhancing decision-making and optimising the use of precious resources, AI is not just changing industries; it is accelerating global development,” Gobind said. “And in doing so, it reminds us that the technologies of tomorrow must be built together, across borders, with a shared vision for a better world.”
Malaysia will also host two major technology events later this year: the inaugural ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit in August and the Smart Cities World Expo Kuala Lumpur in September, which aim to bring together policymakers, academics, and industry leaders to shape the region’s digital transformation. - July 27, 2025
