Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that on July 20, 222 outdoor movie screenings, known locally as "wayang pacak," will be held across all parliamentary constituencies to broadcast the live installation ceremony of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the 17th King of Malaysia.
Fahmi, who leads the Special Committee for the King’s Installation Events, stated that these screenings will be organized by the Information Department and the Madani Community volunteer group. The events will feature various side activities to engage the public.
"The specific locations for these screenings in each parliamentary constituency will be revealed early next week," Fahmi informed reporters at the Parliament Building. "These wayang pacak screenings are intended to bring the public together to witness the ceremony, which is rich in tradition. Additionally, we will host other activities such as exhibitions and informational sessions."
He emphasized that this initiative aims to unite Malaysians in celebrating this significant occasion, highlighting the distinctiveness of the country's Constitutional Monarchy. "It is an opportunity for people from all walks of life to appreciate this unique event that is exclusive to Malaysia," he added.
Fahmi also mentioned that these outdoor movie screenings are designed to enhance public understanding of the constitutional monarchy concept. He referenced the positive response from the public during the ‘Kembara Kenali Borneo’ tour by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, noting the deep connection between the royal institution and the people.
To ensure widespread accessibility, a live feed of the installation ceremony will be available on social media platforms, allowing Malaysians, including those living abroad, to witness the historic event. "This ceremony is a rare occasion, as Malaysia is one of the few countries that still practices a rotational system for appointing and selecting a head of state," Fahmi remarked. "It is a chance for Malaysians to see this process firsthand."
He also shared that the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and the King of Bahrain, Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, have confirmed their attendance at the installation ceremony. Additionally, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim has extended an invitation to Singapore’s former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
The installation ceremony’s side events will commence with a Yasin Recital and Prayer Ceremony at the National Mosque on July 18, followed by a special Friday prayer sermon on July 19. Mosques in the Federal Territories and states without a Ruler or Sultan will use a standardized text for the sermon, while other states will require consent from their respective Rulers for its use.
The Royal Banquet is scheduled to take place at Istana Negara on the evening of July 20. Meanwhile, the Queen, Raja Zarith Sofiah, will visit the Orang Asli Hospital in Gombak on July 23. Other events, including the “Raja Kita” exhibition at the National Museum, will occur on July 25.
The series of events associated with the installation ceremony will culminate with the Royal Tea Reception at Istana Negara on July 27. — Bernama
