Accusing Israel of breaking international law and UN instructions in its relentless attack on Gaza, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told MPs that Malaysia will ask Arab countries for backing at an emergency summit next week for a petition to exclude Israel from the UN.

Israel began its war in October of last year after a Hamas strike killed 1,200 people on its soil, resulting in the deaths of over 43,000 Palestinians, primarily women and children, and the leveling of much of Gaza.

According to the South China Morning Post, due to allegations that it was infiltrated by Hamas agents, Israel formally ended a decades-old cooperation agreement with the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) on Tuesday. This action was widely denounced as severing the last remaining lifeline for Palestinians.

Muslim-dominated Malaysia has been a strong opponent of Israel's invasion of Gaza, preventing the Israeli shipping company Zim from entering the country and encouraging its citizens to boycott companies they believe are associated with the US, Israel's main backer and weaponry supplier.

Anwar stated that Malaysia remained steadfast in its backing of the Palestinians' right to create their independent state, free from Israel's “dispossession, terrorism, cruelty, and genocide.”

In a special address to parliament on Monday, Anwar stated, “We are also studying a proposal after the violation of laws, principles, and UN decisions for Israel to be expelled as a member of the UN.”

Anwar stated that he would introduce the idea at the Arab League's emergency conference in Riyadh on Monday.

Israel's ongoing "crimes and violations" in Gaza and its extension of military operations in Lebanon will be discussed during the Arab-Islamic summit, according to a statement released by Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry last week.

As one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the US has the ability to veto resolutions that criticize Israel, and it has done so often throughout the years, particularly since the start of the Gaza War.

The necessity for Arab and Muslim countries to agree on requests to make to the UN was emphasized by Anwar, who has regularly criticized Western leaders for their involvement in Israel's actions.

According to him, these demands include calling for an immediate truce to allow for the delivery of food, medicine, and humanitarian aid to Palestinians and the creation of a UN Special Committee Against Apartheid that would specifically target Israel.

Along with pushing for the UNRWA to have complete access to give relief to Palestinians, Malaysia will also attempt to take a united front against a recent decision by Israel's parliament to prohibit the organization on its land and in territories under its control.
