History reverberates in the center of Kuala Lumpur, especially in the area around Merdeka Square. Recalling a crucial period in the history of our country is unforgettable. I am instantly reminded of the pivotal moment of our country's independence when I see this famous location, which is dominated by the imposing Sultan Abdul Samad building with its characteristic copper domes and clock tower set against the contemporary skyline. It reminds us of the iconic picture and sound of our cherished founding father, Tunku Abdul Rahman, yelling "Merdeka!" (Independence!) seven times on August 31, 1957, at this very spot. That powerful proclamation, which reverberated throughout Dataran Merdeka, was the birth of a nation's soul. Malaysia, as we know and love it now, may never have effectively and peacefully attained its independence without Tunku's inspiring leadership, unflinching will, and capacity to bring different voices together.
Our founding father, Tunku Abdul Rahman, is honoured in a mosaic portrait. His likeness is incorporated into a contemporary wall in a style reminiscent of traditional Malay art. The area is firmly rooted in its historical setting, which also makes the mood of the historic day tangible. The elaborate geometric designs around the image are typical of regional artistry and represent the rich and varied cultural legacy that characterises Malaysian identity and spirit.
Merdeka Square serves as a constant reminder of what is possible when we band together. Our distinct Malaysian culture and spirit are still defined by the principles of tolerance, understanding, and respect that served as the cornerstone of our freedom movement. All nationalities, cultures, and religions gather there to commemorate our common past. This place is about more than just reflecting on the past; it is about finding inspiration to create a more cohesive and prosperous future while always appreciating the freedom gained on that momentous day.
