Malaysia has seen emergencies being declared during times of war, public disorder, political crisis, national disaster and the Covid-19 epidemic. The best known emergency period (1948-1960) involved Malaya's battles with the MNLA. This gave the British colonial, and subsequently, the elected Malayan (followed by the Malaysian) government sweeping powers to ban a number of political parties, detain suspected communist insurgents and to enact war. It clearly saw British, Commonwealth allies and Malayan forces together with our national freedom fighters defeated MNLA communist revolt in Malaya. Evidently, Malaya's first general election in August 1959 and the first Parliament sitting in September 1959 was held under the said emergency period.
According to my uncle, Lt. Kolonel Dato' Nawawi Mat Desa (Retired), “Japan invaded Malaya on Monday, 08 December 1941, Japanese troops launched an amphibious assault on the north eastern coast of Malaya at Kota Bharu, Kelantan and started advancing down the eastern coast of Malaya. Japanese forces also landed at Pattani and Songkhla, Southern Thailand. then moved south across the Thailand-Malayan border to attack the western part of Malaya. In less than two months, the battle for Malaya had ended in defeat for the British forces and they had to retreat from Malaya to their fortress of Singapore.”
Dato' Nawawi revealed, “The Japanese Army occupied Malaya until 15 August 1945, with Emperor Hirohito gave a recorded radio address to the Empire announcing the acceptance on the terms for ending the war that the Allies had set down in the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July 1945. Subsequently, in June 1948, a state of emergency was declared in Malaya to combat insurgency onslaught of MNLA attacking rubber plantations, mines & derailing trains.”
It is heartwarming to learn that in conjunction with Merdeka Day 2026 celebrations, Old Edwardian Association Kuala Lumpur (OEAKL) has arranged for a forum titled “Suara Merdeka, Warisan Darurat” (Independent Voice, Legacy of Emergency) for students and teachers at my alma mater in Taiping on 21 August. The objective is getting our students who are the future leaders of Malaysia to “Appreciate the Struggle for our Merdeka to Build the Future”.
