Malaysians are known to be durian lovers. There are many types of durians, from Musang King to D24 to kampung durian, and we’re guilty as charged for loving all of them equally! Whether it’s a sweet, buttery delight or a pungent, acquired taste, the durian holds a special place in our hearts.

While being named the King of Fruits, the durian does have its fair share of downsides. @DoktorSamhan shared a story about a patient who rushed into his clinic, barely able to walk, pale, and sweating profusely after eating durian.

“I don’t know what’s happening to me”

Dr. Samhan questioned the patient how he was feeling and if he had eaten anything. He then advised the patient to sit down and take slow, deep breaths to help calm himself down.

The patient, visibly distressed, replied,

“I feel like vomiting, and my head is spinning. I ate durian after lunch, then had coffee because I felt sleepy. But after that, I started feeling weird, doctor.”

It’s advisable to wait 4 to 6 hours after eating durian

Dr. Samhan explained that his patient was experiencing “intoxication,” or in other words, mild poisoning, attributing it to the combination of durian and coffee that had put the patient in that state.

“Durian is rich in sulfur and carbohydrates, while coffee contains caffeine, which can lead to dehydration. When combined, they can provoke bad reactions in the body.”

He pointed out that it’s best to wait 4 to 6 hours after eating durian before having coffee. He also highlighted the importance of staying hydrated, especially after consuming durian.

Best to avoid these foods and drinks after eating durian!

Dr. Samhan also compiled a list of other combinations with durian that can have similar effects as coffee, such as alcohol, carbonated drinks, oily or spicy foods, milk, dairy products, and high-protein foods.

“So, for all durian lovers out there, remember to be careful what you combine with durian. While delicious, it can cause harm if combined improperly.”

“Even though I don’t eat durian except for tempoyak, this information is still good to note in case someone accidentally eats durian paired with hot latte one day. Thank you, doctor.”

Since it’s durian season in Malaysia, it’s important to stay mindful of what you consume, especially after enjoying durians!
