In a world where education is a crucial element in shaping future generations, leaders of Malaysia should set out to revamp the education system based on four pillars: teaching staff, curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment methods. Recognising the need for a comprehensive and long-term plan, they should embark on a twenty-year journey to transform the Malaysian education system.

The first pillar that needs to be tackled is the teaching staff. It is crucial to recognise that dedicated and qualified educators are essential for providing high-quality education. One needs to devise a rigorous selection process to attract the most talented individuals, emphasising subject matter expertise and a passion for teaching. Additionally, it is vital to introduce generationally relevant ongoing professional development programs to equip teachers with the latest instructional strategies and technology.

The second pillar, the curriculum, should undergo a significant transformation. The existing traditional learning approach needed to be replaced with a more holistic and student-centred curriculum. Drawing inspiration from best practices worldwide, one needs to craft a curriculum that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. It should include subjects such as financial literacy, environmental sustainability, and digital literacy to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.

The third pillar, pedagogy, is crucial in achieving the desired educational outcomes. To ensure that students are actively engaged in the learning process, the plan should encourage innovative teaching methodologies. Flexible learning environments would enable students to collaborate, explore, and apply knowledge. Technology should become an integral part of the classrooms, allowing for personalised learning experiences that cater to individual needs and interests.

The final pillar, assessment methods, should be shifted away from traditional testing approaches. Multiple assessment strategies must be introduced to measure student progress holistically. Besides exams, projects, portfolios, and practical demonstrations should be essential to the assessment process. This comprehensive approach would enable educators to assess not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the application of skills and the development of attitudes.

To ensure the success of the twenty-year plan, the leaders need to recognise the importance of proper planning, organisation, leading, and control systems. It is necessary to establish a centralised authority responsible for overseeing the implementation of the reforms. This body would coordinate efforts across different levels of education, ensuring consistency in standards and practices.

Moreover, the government must emphasise the frequent evaluation of the implemented changes. By regularly assessing the effectiveness of the revamped education system, one could identify areas of improvement and make necessary adjustments. Feedback from students, parents, and educators should be actively sought and considered during these evaluations, ensuring that the educational experience remains relevant and in tune with the needs of the evolving society.

It reminds us that education is not only about imparting knowledge but also about nurturing individuals who are prepared to face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

How committed are our current education Minister to revamping the education system? The public is watching and hoping for an overhaul of the education system.
