The Malaysian government has announced that it will not declare a state of emergency at this time, despite the ongoing heatwave. However, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the situation is being closely monitored and that the government is prepared to take further action if necessary.

Ahmad Zahid said that the government has put in place a number of proactive and preventive measures to mitigate the effects of the heatwave, including cloud seeding and water conservation efforts. He added that the government is also working with neighboring countries to address the issue of cross-border haze.

The heatwave has been causing widespread disruption in Malaysia, with temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius in some areas. The government has urged the public to take precautions to stay safe, such as staying hydrated, wearing loose-fitting clothing, and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.

The Climate Emergency Coalition of Malaysia has called on the government to treat the current high temperatures as impacts of a climate emergency. The coalition has also urged the government to take more ambitious steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The Malaysian government has said that it is committed to addressing climate change, but that it will take time to implement the necessary changes. The government has also said that it is working with international partners to develop a global response to climate change.

In the meantime, the Malaysian government is urging the public to be aware of the risks associated with the heatwave and to take steps to stay safe.

Here are some additional details about the heatwave and the government's response:

  • The heatwave is expected to last until September.
  • The government has deployed the armed forces and MetMalaysia to carry out cloud seeding operations at seven dam areas.
  • The National Water Service Commission (SPAN) has been tasked with working with water operators and local authorities on the best way to distribute water for domestic use should there be a shortage.
  • Malaysia is working with authorities from a neighboring country to address the issue of cross-border haze.
  • More than 100 tube wells have been installed mainly in peat soil areas to put out fires quickly.
  • The government is urging the public to be wary of weather conditions to prevent health issues and to be mindful of their water usage.

There are a number of things you can do to help during the heatwave:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
  • Take cool showers or baths.
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room if possible.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and relatives.
  • If you are experiencing any health problems, seek medical attention.
