Malaysian Harvard students can continue studies without disruptions - Ministry

MALAYSIAN students enrolled at Harvard University can continue their studies without disruption to their visa status for the time being, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) confirmed on Sunday.

The ministry’s statement follows the latest decision by the US Federal Court to maintain a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) filed by Harvard University. The ruling offers relief to more than 6,800 international students at the institution, including Malaysians.

“This decision allows international students, including Malaysian students, to continue their studies without any interruption to their visa status at this time,” Bernama cited KPT saying in a statement, adding that it has been closely monitoring the issue through the Education Malaysia office in Washington D.C. (EMWDC).

KPT added it is in communication with relevant scholarship sponsors and US education authorities and welcomes their commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of Malaysian students.

“The ministry and EMWDC have engaged with relevant sponsors and US education authorities. We appreciate their commitment to working with us to ensure the welfare of Malaysian students is protected,” the ministry said.

KPT also reminded students to keep their Optional Practical Training (OPT) records up to date and to exercise caution in matters involving immigration procedures.

“At present, no Malaysian student has reported any issues or problems related to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) or visa revocation,” it added.

For new students planning to begin studies at Harvard in September 2025, the ministry advised them to stay in close contact with both the university and their sponsors to obtain the latest information before making further decisions.

“Malaysia believes that cross-border higher education is vital to developing global talent, fostering knowledge exchange, and enhancing strategic cooperation between nations,” the ministry said.

KPT called for calm and urged all parties to act based on verified information while prioritising student interests.

“In line with the Malaysia MADANI framework, KPT will continue to support Malaysian students abroad under all circumstances,” it concluded. - June 8, 2025
