In a significant operation, the Malaysian Immigration Department has dismantled a syndicate known as ‘Geng Broga’ that was allegedly involved in the illegal trafficking of Indonesian nationals. The operation took place in Sungai Besar and Sabak Bernam, Selangor, on June 6.

Datuk Ruslin Jusoh, the director-general of the Immigration Department, stated on June 7 that a team of enforcement officers from the Immigration headquarters in Putrajaya discovered 12 Indonesians during the operation, which began at 8.05 pm.

The operation was initiated based on public information and surveillance conducted by the department. The team identified three suspicious vehicles: a Perodua Alza, a Perodua Bezza, and a Proton Waja driven by suspects who attempted to flee the scene. However, the officers successfully intercepted the vehicles and detained the three drivers.

Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the detained drivers, a 47-year-old man, was the mastermind of the syndicate. The other two, aged 31 and 40, acted as transporters. Additionally, two men, a woman, and a child, all Indonesians, were also apprehended.

Following information obtained during the initial interrogations, officers were deployed to a mangrove area in Sabak Bernam. There, they intercepted and detained eight more Indonesians who had just arrived from Indonesia by sea. This brought the total number of detainees to 15, ranging in age from 5 to 52 years old.

In the course of the operation, the authorities seized five Indonesian passports, RM6,200 in cash, and the three vehicles involved. Datuk Ruslin explained that the syndicate’s modus operandi involved using the sea route to smuggle Indonesians from Tanjung Balai in Indonesia to Sungai Besar in Selangor. The illegal immigrants were transported via fishing vessels and then transferred to smaller boats before being brought ashore.

The mastermind of the syndicate was responsible for all logistical arrangements, with the charges for smuggling varying between RM1,500 and RM2,500 depending on the gender of the individuals. The syndicate is believed to have been operating for approximately a year.

Datuk Ruslin emphasized the department’s commitment to combating illegal immigration and human trafficking. He urged the public to continue providing information that could help in the identification and dismantling of such syndicates. The successful operation against ‘Geng Broga’ highlights the effectiveness of public cooperation and the vigilance of the Immigration Department in safeguarding the nation’s borders.

This operation marks a significant victory in the ongoing fight against illegal immigration and human trafficking, ensuring the safety and security of Malaysia’s borders. The department continues to be vigilant in its efforts to prevent such activities and protect the integrity of the nation.
