Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail addressed concerns regarding three Malaysians being placed on a US terror watch list, acknowledging the issue but indicating a lack of clarity on the reasons behind it. Saifuddin Nasution stated that he became aware of the situation a few days prior and has since reached out to Inspector General Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain for further clarification. He emphasized the importance of verifying the facts surrounding the matter, particularly in light of a reported request from the FBI.
The controversy stemmed from a letter purportedly from the Home Ministry circulating on social media. This letter claimed that three Malaysians associated with Islamic non-governmental organizations had been listed in the Terrorist Screening Center of the FBI. The ministry allegedly instructed Ops Ihsan, an organization facilitating aid to displaced Palestinians in Gaza, to sever ties with the named individuals.
Ops Ihsan secretariat chairman Jismi Johari confirmed receiving the ministry's letter on February 15, according to various local news sources. The individuals named in the letter were identified as Awang Suffian Awang Piut from Aman Palestin Berhad, Ahmad Musa Al from Persatuan Cinta Syria, and Datuk Abu Bakar Abdul from Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI).
In response to these claims, Datuk Abu Bakar Abdul, reportedly a former secretary-general of DMDI, expressed his lack of awareness regarding his inclusion on the FBI terror list or the reasons behind it. He stated that he had not been informed to cease involvement with Ops Ihsan.
The situation has raised concerns and prompted official inquiries into the matter, as authorities seek to ascertain the veracity of the claims and determine any necessary actions. The involvement of Malaysians in international security issues underscores the interconnected nature of global counterterrorism efforts. As investigations continue, stakeholders are keen to ensure transparency and address any potential threats effectively.
Efforts to combat terrorism require close collaboration between national and international agencies, as well as proactive measures to prevent radicalization and extremism within communities. Malaysia, like many other nations, remains vigilant in its commitment to safeguarding security and upholding the rule of law, both domestically and internationally.
