THE government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens from escalating living costs and the ripple effects of the global energy crisis, which continue to push up commodity prices and strain household budgets.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who chaired the 17th meeting of the National Cost of Living Action Council (NACCOL) Executive Committee, highlighted the government’s determination to prevent exploitation by unscrupulous parties.
“The interests of the people will continue to be a priority, and strict action will be taken against any party who breach regulations,” he said, adding that any attempt to justify excessive price increases using the Middle East conflict would not be tolerated.
Zahid emphasised the government’s attentiveness to the pressures faced by Malaysians.
“Understanding the cost-of-living pressures experienced by the people, the government is always mindful and ensures that every measure is taken to defend livelihoods without imposing additional burdens,” he explained.
As part of a responsive approach, NACCOL executive meetings will now be convened regularly to address emerging issues promptly.
“This is to ensure that every matter impacting the people can be tackled swiftly and effectively without delay,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
The government has earmarked RM54.7 billion for 2026 to support social assistance, subsidies, and income-enhancing initiatives.
These include the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA), the Program Jualan Rahmah, as well as subsidies targeting fuel and the agricultural sector, delivering tangible benefits to citizens.
Zahid noted that these allocations could rise further as developments in the Middle East continue to impact local markets.
Highlighting the breadth of government assistance, he said, “More than 13.7 million citizens currently benefit from 60 social assistance programmes nationwide.
“Of this number, over half receive at least two forms of aid, while nearly one-third are households with incomes below RM2,000. This demonstrates that government assistance truly reaches those in need.”
Beyond financial measures, the administration intends to strengthen public transport infrastructure, broaden economic and employment opportunities, and ensure that citizens have access to clear, transparent, and easily understandable information.
“The people have the right to accurate information to make the best decisions in their daily lives. I wish to emphasise that the government will continue to stand with the people under all circumstances.
“All policies and measures are implemented to ensure the welfare of citizens is preserved, particularly amid current economic challenges,” Zahid added. - April 2, 2026
