A Malaysian man who once earned nearly RM15,000 a month has chosen mental peace over a high-paying corporate job, trading boardroom pressure for the freedom of life as a delivery rider.
The man, who previously worked in the plantation sector, said his last salary — including commission — was close to RM15,000. Despite the attractive paycheck and professional stability, he decided to resign after being diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and enduring frequent panic attacks brought on by workplace stress.
The relentless pace of corporate life, late-night calls, and demanding clients took a toll on his mental well-being. He described how anxiety and exhaustion had gradually replaced his sense of accomplishment, leaving him feeling trapped in a cycle of burnout.
After walking away from his job, he began working as a food delivery rider, taking advantage of the gig economy to regain control of his time and mental space. The decision, he admitted, came with financial uncertainty, but the change brought something far more valuable — emotional freedom.
Now, his days are spent moving at his own pace, meeting friends, spending time with family, and enjoying small moments that he once overlooked. He expressed relief at no longer being expected to answer work messages at odd hours or to maintain a forced smile during stressful meetings.
While acknowledging that gig work has its own challenges — including inconsistent income and long hours on the road — he described his current life as “lighter,” saying that it allowed him to breathe, think, and live with less pressure.
He shared that he recently stopped taking his prescribed medication after feeling emotionally stronger and more stable. For the first time in years, he said, he genuinely feels free — no longer defined by corporate titles or monthly figures but by his ability to live on his own terms.
His story resonates deeply with many Malaysians who are struggling to balance career ambitions with mental health. It highlights a growing sentiment that success is not always measured by salary slips or promotions but by the quality of one’s life and peace of mind.
In choosing a simpler path, the former executive proved that sometimes, true happiness begins the moment one walks away from everything that no longer feels right.
