A Malaysian man is praised online after his viral Threads post explaining why phone batteries drain faster during travel gained over 40,000 likes, sparking discussion among netizens.

A Malaysian man is receiving praise from netizens after sharing an interesting explanation about why smartphone batteries tend to drain faster during long journeys.

The post, shared by Threads user @abe.had, has gone viral, garnering over 40,500 likes, more than 600 comments, nearly 12,000 reposts and over 500 shares.

In his post, he highlighted a situation many Malaysians can relate to, especially during long trips back to their hometowns.

“Have you noticed? When you’re at home, your phone battery can last the whole day.

“But when you travel back to your hometown using the PLUS highway or the ETS, your phone stays quietly in your pocket and you’re not even using it.

“Suddenly when you check it, the battery drops from 100% to 60%. Why does this happen? Is something draining the battery?”

He explained that many people assume the problem is caused by apps running in the background or navigation apps such as Waze, but the real reason is something else.

According to him, the main cause is a process known in IT as “cellular handover”.

“When you’re sitting still at home, your phone only connects to one telco tower, so it saves battery.

“But when you’re travelling quickly on the highway, the signal from the first tower becomes weaker as you move further away. Your phone then has to work much harder to search for and lock onto the next tower.”

He added that this process can happen hundreds of times during a long journey, causing the phone to use significantly more battery power.

The explanation quickly caught the attention of social media users, many of whom praised the poster for sharing useful knowledge in a simple and easy-to-understand way.

Some users said the post helped them understand something they had wondered about for years.

rmh.ri said: “Your knowledge is impressive. I thought the battery drained only because of background apps.”

“Good information here. Now I finally know why my battery always drains,” yananawi__ added.

Others thanked the user for sharing knowledge that many people were not aware of.

Another user, adielahhbits, also expressed appreciation: “I really like it when people share knowledge like this. I never thought about it before. Please share more information like this.”

One commenter from the telecommunications industry even confirmed the explanation.
