Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has made it clear that he would not accept personal gifts, even if they were from high-profile individuals like Elon Musk. During a recent event in Felda, he stated that if Musk were to offer him a Tesla, he would not accept it for personal use. Instead, he would register the vehicle as a property of the government.
Anwar's statement came as he addressed the attendees at the Felda event on Thursday, July 27. He emphasized his commitment to the principles of integrity and transparency, stating that he would not accept personal gifts, even if they were from influential figures or foreign leaders. He shared that he had previously declined offers of luxury items, including a new car that was offered to him after someone saw his Proton.
The Prime Minister further revealed that he had been offered expensive watches and cars, even by a foreign leader whose identity he chose not to disclose. He maintained that he would not accept such gifts, and if they were sent to him, he would register them under the Malaysian government. This, he said, was in line with the true spirit of Malaysia Madani, which prioritizes honesty and integrity over personal gain.
Anwar also took the opportunity to criticize those who claim to uplift Malays and Islam but fail to adhere to basic principles of integrity. He stressed that such individuals should not speak of uplifting these communities if they cannot even manage to do simple things like refusing personal gifts.
In his speech, Anwar also touched on the topic of Elon Musk's decision to invest in Malaysia. He attributed this decision to the country's political stability, which he believes is a key factor in attracting foreign investment. He noted that many had tried to persuade Musk to invest in Malaysia, including a former minister who personally visited Musk's office, but to no avail.
However, with the current unity government, Anwar believes that the political stability has improved, which has made the country more attractive to investors. He emphasized the importance of political stability in ensuring investor confidence, joking that even village heads have held onto their positions longer than some prime ministers.
Anwar also highlighted the importance of forming alliances with other political coalitions for the sake of political stability. He mentioned that this was not an easy task, as it required him to collaborate with Barisan Nasional and Umno. However, he believes that such alliances are necessary for the betterment of the people, as they allow the government to provide better services and improve facilities for the people, the Malays, and Felda.
