The Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) has sounded an emergency call, tinged with deep concern, over the impending specter of rising food prices. This ominous threat looms large as the government has decided to remove the ceiling price on two staple items - chicken and eggs.

Presma's president, Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan, has issued a grave warning: if the prices of chicken and eggs soar substantially, the restaurant operators may have no alternative but to pass on the burden to consumers in the form of higher food prices. This dire prospect is not one that restaurant owners take lightly, as they are keenly aware that consumers already grapple with the ever-increasing cost of living.

Jawahar Ali Taib Khan, however, believes in a measure of responsibility among restaurant operators. He asserts that they will not hastily hike prices; instead, they will cautiously assess the market dynamics and compare their pricing with other restaurants.

In this way, they hope to mitigate the burden on their loyal patrons. "The decision to increase food prices will depend on the cost of operations, as every restaurant has different operating costs," he stressed. "No one wants to continue a business if they cannot make a profit."

Presma's chief has also raised an urgent plea to the government. He calls for the expansion of the supplier base, urging authorities to permit more suppliers to import these critical food products. Such a move, he contends, would ensure a steady supply and thus help to stabilize the prices of eggs and chickens in the market. This, in turn, could potentially shield the public from the brunt of any future price hikes.

Yet, Jawahar Ali Taib Khan remains deeply troubled about the two possible scenarios that might unfold when price controls are lifted. In the first scenario, he envisions healthy competition among suppliers, paving the way for consumers to make their choices based on affordability, a development that would ostensibly benefit the masses.

However, he also paints a more ominous picture: suppliers possibly colluding in a cartel-like manner, hoarding products, which could result in temporary shortages. Such exploitation would, in all likelihood, lead to skyrocketing prices, with the beleaguered public bearing the heaviest load.

Jawahar Ali Taib Khan, who is also the owner of the Ali Maju Restaurant franchise, gives his solemn assurance that food prices at his establishment will remain constant despite the rising costs of sourcing supplies. He remains committed to serving the community, even in the face of adversity.

In a startling turn of events, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a move that has raised eyebrows and heightened anxieties, announced on Friday the temporary suspension of price controls on eggs and chicken.

The government's rationale is to allow the local market to function with more freedom, thereby ensuring a sufficient supply of these essential commodities. It is a decision fraught with uncertainty and met with trepidation from various quarters, as the nation braces for the consequences that may lie ahead.
