KUALA LUMPUR — The police have arrested 31 people, including six minors and a foreign national, in a sweeping operation targeting an online child sexual abuse network distributing exploitative material across multiple platforms.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the arrests were made under “Op Pedo 2.0”, a joint operation between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), carried out from September 22 to 30.

Raids at 37 locations nationwide led to the seizure of 82 digital devices containing more than 880,000 files of child sexual abuse and adult pornography — a twentyfold increase compared with the previous operation in December 2024.

“This operation was the result of digital intelligence, dark web monitoring, and public reports on the online sexual exploitation of children,” Mohd Khalid told reporters today, as quoted by Bernama.

Seventeen suspects have been charged in court between September 24 and October 10, while 14 others were released on police bail.

The offences were investigated under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, the Penal Code, and the Immigration Act 1959/63. Fifteen suspects pleaded guilty and were fined between RM1,000 and RM10,000.

Investigations revealed that the syndicate used Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, and dark web platforms, with some suspects managing private groups that sold access to explicit material using e-wallets and QR codes.

Among those detained were individuals in positions of authority, including religious teachers. Police also uncovered evidence of growing commercialisation in the trade, now driven increasingly by profit.

One alarming case involved a 17-year-old student who earned RM76,000 in nine months by selling child pornography online.

“These findings show a serious moral shift and an urgent need to strengthen parental supervision and control of device use among children,” Mohd Khalid said.

He vowed uncompromising action against those profiting from the exploitation of children, adding that PDRM will continue to work with MCMC and international enforcement agencies to combat online child abuse.

“Strict and uncompromising action will be taken against any party that profits from the suffering of our children,” he said. — October 24, 2025
