Ananda Krishnan, one of Malaysia’s most prominent corporate faces and a pioneer in the nation’s telecommunications industry, has passed away at the age of 86.
The tragic development was confirmed through a statement from his flagship investment company, Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd, earlier today. “It is with great sadness that we announce the demise of our chairman, Mr Ananda Krishnan Tatparanandam, who passed away peacefully on November 28th, 2024.” it read, and requests that the public grant his family privacy during this period of mourning.
Ananda Krishnan, Malaysian billionaire telco tycoon, passes away
With family roots stretching back to Jaffna in Sri Lanka, Ananda Krishnan was born in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur on 1st April 1938. Academically capable, he studied in the Vivekananda Tamily School located in his childhood neighbourhood, before later enrolling into the illustrious Victoria Institution. Proving his intellectual merits, Krishnan was selected to become a Colombo Plan scholar and was granted a sponsorship to pursue his tertiary education with the University of Melbourne in Australia, where he majored in political science. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1964.
As for his landmark career in business, Ananda Krishnan’s debut venture started with MAI Holdings Sdn Bhd, a consultancy firm which he founded. This would later follow with the establishment of Exoil Trading, an enterprise which focused on the purchasing of global oil drilling concessions. Buoyed by the financial success of his interests in the oil and gas industry, he proceeded to set his sights on two budding fields – multimedia and telecommunications.
In the 1980s, he was among some of the key players behind the Live Aid concert alongside Bob Geldof, which rallied some of the world’s biggest stars of the time including Madonna, Queen, and Elton John, to fund relief efforts for the Ethiopian famine that took place between 1983 to 1985. This set the precedent for his aptitude in navigating the global media and telecommunications industries, which brought about the birth of both Maxis Communications and MEASAT Satellite Systems. The latter is especially noteworthy for launching Malaysia’s first-ever communications satellite, MEASAT-1, enabling the formation of the nation’s first direct-to-home satellite television service, Astro, which he also owns.
His net worth was last estimated to be in the range of 5.1 billion USD (RM22.66 billion) in 2024, making him one of Malaysia’s wealthiest individuals. Despite his considerable wealth, Ananda Krishnan remained notoriously private and granted a scant few interviews to the press throughout his lifetime. Prior to his passing, he divided his time between living in both Malaysia and France, the latter of which he resided with his wife.
However, his contributions to Malaysian society through his philanthropic efforts were undisputed. Among some of his most notable charitable initiatives include the Harapan Nusantara education fund, which has sponsored special programs at local private universities for over 100 students annually since 2004. This is in addition to the Yu Cai Education Foundation, which he established to provide financial sponsorship to aid members of the ethnic Chinese community in Malaysia.
Ananda Krishnan is survived by his lone son and two daughters. We extend our deepest condolences to his family during this time.
