Navigating traffic fines can be a cumbersome task, but for one Malaysian woman, a seemingly routine payment turned into a nightmare. After receiving an email from 'no-reply@rmp.gov.my' notifying her of a purported RM50 traffic summons, she found herself duped by a sophisticated scam. The email directed her to the official MyBayar PDRM portal, confirming the presence of an outstanding summons against her vehicle.

The message didn't stop at a simple warning; it also emphasized potential consequences for failing to settle the fine promptly. Unfortunately, unaware of the deception, the woman clicked on a link within the email, leading her to a fabricated MyBayar PDRM webpage. There, she dutifully entered her sensitive banking information - name, password, and OTP number - into the provided form.

Tragically, the fake webpage declared the received SMS code as invalid and the payment unsuccessful. Unbeknownst to her, the scammer had already infiltrated her bank account, siphoning off a staggering RM31,638.85. It was only after receiving a call from her bank that the victim realized the extent of the deceit, learning that her funds had been transferred to another account not once, but three times.

In light of this distressing incident, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the victim promptly filed a police report regarding the email scam. He further cautioned the public against responding to any emails purporting to be from PDRM regarding summon payments, as the authorities do not employ email for such communication.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals to exploit unsuspecting individuals. It underscores the importance of vigilance and discernment when dealing with online communications, especially those involving sensitive financial information. As the investigation progresses, it is hoped that measures will be taken to bring those responsible for this malicious scheme to justice.
