Following the incident where a gas pipeline exploded in Putra Heights, causing hundreds to become injured and displaced, many have since started looking into whether their homes are situated near gas pipelines.

A Malaysian girl, Xinxin Niyi, has since taken to her XiaoHongShu page to educate others on how to spot underground gas pipelines through little yellow signages.

She wrote, “To everyone, it wasn’t a petrol station that exploded. It was a gas pipeline that exploded. I asked my husband (what to do) if you want to know whether your home is within the range of a gas pipeline, (he said) you can check if there is a yellow Petronas sign on the roadside near your home.”

“Usually, there should be one where there is a petrol station. I looked up some Google Maps Street View and found that there was one a few kilometers from my home. So, next time you buy a house, you can consider whether to buy near a gas pipeline.”

UMNO Youth Committee Leader for Kota Raya, Haji Mohd Zaffarollah, too, explained on the yellow signages in the comment section of his Facebook post highlighting residents’ concerns over construction near the gas pipeline that later exploded.

He wrote, “The signage is a warning about the existence of a Petronas gas pipeline on the route. Please refer to picture number 4. The situation from December (2024) is completely different from the original, and this proves that there has been encroachment on the very sensitive Petronas gas pipeline area.”

Here’s how you can check online

One netizen, though, revealed that natural gas pipelines may not actually appear near all petrol stations, and shared how people can check for gas pipelines online.

“Not all places with gas stations necessarily have natural gas pipelines. After all, these pipelines are not meant to supply gas stations. Natural gas pipelines are divided into Transmission Pipelines (which are high pressure) and Distribution Pipelines (which are low pressure),”

“The high-pressure ones are managed by Petronas, while the low-pressure ones are managed by Gas Malaysia. If you want to know if a natural gas pipeline runs near your home, you can go to their respective websites to refer to their network map,” they said.
