As we start a new year in 2023, let us all be determined to start right. On the first day of 2023, I attended a wedding. This couple chose the first day of the new year to start a new chapter in their lives as husband and wife. And I thought it is also good for all of us, citizens of this nation need to start 2023 right.

The first word that came to mind regarding starting 2023 right is LOVE. Love is magical if we understand and pursue it correctly. A mother's love causes her to make sacrifices for her newborn child. Adjustments are made to the couple's time and resources to cater to their new addition. As the child grows, love causes the parents to teach and discipline. When parenting gets tough, parents persevere in loving, protecting and not giving up.

What will love be able to do for a nation? Love for our nation causes us to be humble and teachable. We reflect on our weaknesses and acknowledge the strengths we see in others. Our love for Malaysia causes us to look at the bright side and do all we can to protect our nation. We can make an effort to protect our natural as well as human resources so that Malaysia can prosper. We speak up on issues that affect us as a nation and refuse to be silenced. We choose to forget the ugly experiences of our past as a nation and move on in trust, faith and hope. Love causes us to keep pressing on and not give up.

So, as we start 2023, let us all as Malaysians choose to love Malaysia. We admit that as a nation, we have many weaknesses and failures. We have been hurt and disappointed many times. The great brain drain from our nation has benefited many other nations. But we can still have hope if we refuse to give up. Let us choose to look at the bright side and restructure Malaysia on the principles of Rukunegara (See my previous article 'Remember Our Rukunegara' in October 2022).

Let us choose to be Malaysians loving Malaysia!
