A Guest Editorial article titled: PM Anwar Gives Agong ‘Green Light’ On Pardon For Najib has shocked Malaysians
To understand the reasons and arguments, two writers Murray Hunter, have posted Joe Fernandez’s article. It runs across most legal issues, those supporting a pardon for Najib would argue. The report researched the legal implications that keep people guessing.
Lawyer and commentator Kandiah Chelliah said that the Wilayah Persekutuan's Pardons Board has the absolute prerogative to recommend Royal Pardon to the Agung as per Article 42, and the Prime Minister is aware of this. However, Kandiah expressed shock about why three writers, including Raja Petra's news blog, they campaigned for Najib's Royal Pardon in one article. “Let the legal process proceed.”
The article states: “The stage is being set for Najib’s pardon sometime soon. One should not be surprised when that day occurs. There is a view circulating that the sooner Najib receives a pardon, the better, so voters will have forgotten by the time the next election comes.”
The article's content by Joe Fernandez makes a case with arguments for and against Najib’s pardon.
So far, no one is aware of Anwar giving the green light because Anwar has not spoken of allowing Najib’s pardon. Anwar has so far not made any statement supporting the pardon.
The well-thought-out, planned and researched commentary and analysis states: “If we pen this commentary and analysis in January next year when the Johor Sultan replaces the Pahang Sultan as Agong, the headline and sub-headline would most probably read as follows: Najib’s Pardon Johor Sultan’s first national duty priority.”
“Instead, we find that based on the grapevine and media Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has virtually given the “green light” on Pardon for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. That means the Agong, presently from Pahang, can Pardon Najib with or without the Prime Minister’s advice and without giving reasons and/or mitigating."
Murray Hunter’s article was first published in Malaysia today.Net on October 1, 2023.
In conclusion, Murray Hunter states, “The views expressed are those of the writer (Joe Fernandez) and do not necessarily reflect those of Murray Hunter.”
Many Malaysians are shocked that Anwar would give the green light for Najib’s pardon, especially after Zahid Hamidi’s DNAA verdict, which Malaysians did not well receive.
Some of the questions Malaysians are asking:
- Did Anwar give the green light for Najib’s pardon?
- Has he calculated the far-reaching implications of giving a pardon?
- Is Anwar allowing the pardon to save UMNO?
- What guarantees that a divided UMNO will unite on Najib’s release?
- Will PH suffer losses in GE16 at the expense of UMNO and saving Najib?
- Have PH’s component parties, like DAP, agreed to allow the pardon?
- How about PH’s allies in East Malaysia?
- Will Anwar forgive Najib after Saiful’s case, which made him go back to prison?
Last year, before GE15, the Malay Mail reported on August 27, “This week’s Federal Court ruling that sent former prime minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak to jail will give Pakatan Harapan (PH) the fillip at the next general election,” Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
“The federal Opposition leader, now 75, told business newswire Bloomberg published today that he would campaign on the issue in a vote that could be held as soon as this year, driving the message that Najib's imprisonment is a step in the right path to eradicating corruption and even among the country’s most powerful elites would not be immune to the law.”
