If you've been feeling guilty about your unread book pile, Malaysia's official reading statistics suggest you might actually be in decent company nationally, even if your own shelf says otherwise. According to the National Library of Malaysia's Reading Profile Study, the average Malaysian now reads 24 books a year, made up of 16 printed titles and eight digital ones, up sharply from 15 books in 2014 and just two books back in 2005.
The reading interest rate nationally stands at 88.6 percent, a figure the government has been keen to highlight as evidence of a more knowledge driven society, and one it has tied specifically to closing the gap with the country's 97 percent literacy rate. The study also found that a large share of Malaysians prefer reading in bookstores, at 57.7 percent, while another 24.5 percent said they liked reading in restaurants or cyber cafes, details that suggest reading habits here are shaped as much by where people feel comfortable settling in as by the books themselves. Officials have used the figures to push for more reading spaces inside shopping malls and a wider spread of bookstores to match.
A separate 2026 consumer survey found that Malaysians spend close to RM368 a month on books and articles as a leisure category, putting reading roughly in the same spending tier as gaming, even if it takes a back seat to travel and exercise when it comes to overall leisure priorities. Reading showed up in that same survey as a quieter, more personal habit rather than a dominant one, sitting alongside cooking and baking as background activities that don't necessarily eat up huge amounts of time but stay consistent regardless of what else is competing for people's attention.
Not everyone is convinced the picture is as rosy once you zoom in. A separate national survey focused specifically on students found a real gap between academic reading, which stays strong because exams demand it, and leisure reading for its own sake, with more than a quarter of respondents admitting they don't read as a personal hobby at all. Frequent readers overwhelmingly come from homes with more than 20 books already on the shelf, suggesting the habit is still unevenly distributed depending on what kind of household you grew up in, and that reading for pleasure often has less to do with individual willpower than with simple access to books in the first place.
