DEPUTY Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has urged all Malaysians to reflect on the recent demonstrations in Indonesia, warning that political instability can quickly disrupt national harmony and economic growth.
Speaking at the Kembara Segulai Sejalai Belia Sarawak 2025 programme in Kuching on Saturday, Fadillah stressed the need for national unity and stability, citing the unrest across the neighbouring republic as a cautionary tale.
“Look at what happened in our neighbouring country. Various narratives were stirred up by certain parties, provoking public anger. When the people become angry, they protest—and what begins as a peaceful demonstration can quickly turn otherwise,” Bernama reported him saying.
“Stability and peace are essential to managing a country effectively. When our economy thrives, investors come, and job opportunities grow. The people must stay united,” he added.
His remarks come in the wake of recent protests in central Jakarta, particularly in the Senayan area, which prompted concern from regional leaders.
On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told reporters that Malaysia and fellow ASEAN member states hoped for a swift resolution to the situation in Indonesia.
Anwar also revealed that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had assured him during a recent meeting in Beijing that the situation in the republic was improving.
The Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta confirmed on 29 August that it was closely monitoring developments in the Indonesian capital following the demonstrations. - Sept 6, 2025
