MALAYSIANS have been urged to prioritise road safety during the Aidilfitri festive season to prevent a surge in accidents and fatalities on the nation’s highways.
Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye today highlighted that holiday periods traditionally see a worrying spike in traffic incidents, with tens of thousands of accidents recorded over a short span.
“Statistics indicate that more than 20,000 road accidents can occur within a single week during Aidilfitri celebrations, with hundreds of lives lost nationwide. This is not just a number; it involves the loss of loved ones whose value cannot be measured. This must be stopped,” he said in a statement today.
Lee stressed the importance of embracing the ‘Vision Zero’ principle, which maintains that all road accidents are preventable and that no loss of life on the roads should be deemed acceptable.
He advised motorists to plan their journeys carefully, avoid speeding, and ensure vehicles are in optimal condition before departure.
Drivers should take sufficient rest, pause every two hours to avoid fatigue, and never operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“The use of mobile phones while driving must also be avoided, as it can significantly increase the risk of serious accidents,” he added.
Lee further emphasised that wearing seat belts and ensuring children are secured in appropriate car seats is crucial, alongside practising patience and caution in traffic congestion.
“Special attention must also be given to motorcyclists, who remain among the most vulnerable road users.
“Achieving zero accidents during festive periods requires the cooperation of all parties, including the government, enforcement agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the public.
“Road safety is not a matter of chance; it is the result of the choices we make each time we are on the road. During this Aidilfitri, choose to value life,” he said.
He concluded by expressing hope that the upcoming Aidilfitri celebrations would be enjoyed safely, without incident, allowing journeys to become memorable experiences for all travellers. - March 19, 2026
