The Malaysian passport has been making headlines recently, and thankfully, it’s for all the right reasons. Globally, the Malaysian passport jumped six spots to be the joint-sixth most powerful passport in the world in the Henley Passport Index 2026, surpassing the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and more.
Moreover, it achieved an even higher standing in a separate index by ‘The Passport Index’, where the Malaysian passport was ranked the world’s joint-third most powerful.

Next-generation security features
Besides its prowess of allowing holders visa-free and visa-on-arrival entry to 183 countries and territories, the Malaysian passport’s security is also getting significant enhancements.
A new version, which was set for rollout on 1 June but has since been delayed, will sport 94 security features and tougher safeguards against forgery. These include holograms, ultraviolet printing, special security threads, and more.

Introduction of the 10-year validity passport
Furthermore, Malaysians are getting an option to have double the current passport validity, too.
As confirmed by a Federal Government Gazette published on 3 June, there will be a new 10-year passport validity at RM350 for those aged 13 to 59, half the price for senior citizens, and free for people with disabilities (OKU).

World-class processing efficiency
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) revealed that our country is among the world’s fastest in issuing passports, with an impressive turnaround time of only one hour. For comparison, Singapore requires 3 to 7 days, the United Kingdom 3 to 10 weeks, and the United States 6 to 10 weeks.
The department attributed this commendable efficiency to the system transformation and digitalisation of the nation's passport services.

The push for online renewals
Indeed, among the reasons for this fast turnaround rate is JIM’s 'MyOnline Pasport’ portal, whereby Malaysians between the ages of 13 and 59 with their current passports that are in good physical condition (not lost or damaged) are only allowed to renew online.
For walk-ins, only these categories are allowed:
- First-time passport applicants
- Senior citizens (above 59 years old)
- Children under 13 years old
- People with disabilities (OKU)
- Students (below 21 years old going abroad)
- Hajj pilgrims
- Individuals whose previous passports were lost or severely damaged

Strict crackdown on AI-enhanced photos
With that in mind, as the renewal of passports online requires applicants to upload a photo of themselves, JIM recently warned Malaysians that the use of AI-generated or AI-edited photos is strictly prohibited.
In a statement, JIM stressed that using AI-generated or AI-edited photos, or submitting any false information when applying or renewing a Malaysian passport, is a serious offence. The department added that applicants must ensure their photos are original, clear, and according to the set specifications.

Penalties for non-compliance
Furthermore, any false photo or information submitted may cause the passport application to be rejected and the applicant to face action under the Passport Act 1966 [Act 150].
While JIM didn’t specifically mention the penalties involved, the department is clearly referring to Section 12(1)(a) of Act 150 below.

The above provision establishes that it is an offence for anyone, with the intent to obtain a passport for themselves, to knowingly make any false statement or produce any document which is, to their knowledge, false.
If convicted, Section 12(2) of the Act prescribes a punishment of up to 5 years in jail, up to an RM10,000 fine, or both.

In light of these strict regulations, it is absolutely vital for Malaysians to remember not to use any AI tools, filters, or edits when submitting passport photos.
To ensure your application goes through smoothly and to avoid facing severe legal penalties, always use an original, unaltered photograph that fully complies with the Immigration department's guidelines.
